Neal, Brady Applaud Senate Passage of the Social Security Representative Payee Bill

March 23, 2018
Press Release

WASHINGTON, DC – The Senate passed by unanimous consent yesterday H.R. 4547, the Strengthening Protections for Social Security Beneficiaries Act of 2018 – bipartisan legislation to strengthen and improve the representative payee program to better protect those Social Security beneficiaries who are unable to manage their benefits on their own.

House Ways and Means Committee Ranking Member Richard Neal (D-MA) and Chairman Kevin Brady (R-TX) released the following statement upon Senate passage:

“This bipartisan bill will better protect the millions of Americans who depend on the help of representative payees. By strengthening oversight, improving payee selection, and reducing the burdens put on families, this bill will make much-needed changes to strengthen this program.

“We want to express our gratitude to Social Security Subcommittee Chairman Sam Johnson (R-TX), who has been a champion throughout his career for Americans who depend on Social Security, and to Ranking Member John Larson (D-CT), for his dedication to improving this program. We encourage swift action from the President to sign this important, bipartisan legislation into law.”
