Springfield, MA – Today, Congressman Richard E. Neal joined hundreds of his colleagues as original co-sponsors on a House Resolution in remembrance of Juneteenth Independence Day, the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee introduced this resolution that recognizes June 19, 2020 as the 155th anniversary of this pivotal moment in our nation’s history.

“I am proud to stand with my colleagues in recognition of this important day in our country’s history,” said Congressman Richard E. Neal. “Juneteenth celebrates African American freedom while encouraging self-development and respect for all cultures. Today, while our nation continues to suffer heartache and grief, is a timely reminder that we must continue to protect the freedoms that our nation was founded upon for all members of the American family.

“As President Obama said on this day in 2016, ‘No matter our race, religion, gender, or sexual orientation, we recommit ourselves to working to free modern-day slaves around the world and to honoring in our own time the efforts of those who fought so hard to steer our country truer to our highest ideals.’

“We have come far in our country’s history, but more work must be done. I remain committed to listening, learning, and taking action.”
