SPRINGFIELD, MA – Today, House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Richard E. Neal (D-MA) released the following statement emphasizing the importance of passing additional legislation to speed an economic rebound:

“While our nation remains in a deep economic hole, today’s jobs numbers demonstrate that the response legislation Congress has passed so far is working. Policies like the employee retention tax credit, economic impact payments, and Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation are allowing Americans to stay afloat and slowly begin to get back to work. These Ways and Means Committee measures are essential features in the nation’s recovery strategy.

“It would be extremely irresponsible for Congress to take a step back at the first sign of improvement. Just as doctors insist sick patients complete their full prescription regimens, we must continue to provide workers, families, and small businesses with the full assistance needed to recover from this uniquely complicated crisis. Enhancing the employee retention tax credit, extending emergency unemployment compensation beyond July 31, and providing families with a second round of improved economic impact payments are steps we must take – that’s why House Democrats included them in the Heroes Act. If Congress fails to continue to respond to the emergency, we could quickly lose what progress we’ve made and prolong our nation’s suffering. Senate Republicans need to stop stalling, step up, and do their jobs.”
