Chairman Neal Calls on IRS to Extend Federal Tax Filing Deadline

SPRINGFIELD, MA – Today, Ways and Means Chairman Richard E. Neal (D-MA) called on Department of the Treasury (Treasury) Secretary Steven Mnuchin to extend the federal tax filing deadline to line up with the recently announced payment deadline of July 15, 2020 as the country continues to grapple with the coronavirus crisis. In a letter, Chairman Neal detailed how closures of the IRS Taxpayer Assistance Centers across the country will leave many elderly and low-income taxpayers in need of additional time to file and noted the potential confusion of two deadlines for taxpayers accustomed to only one.

“Although Treasury’s decision provided welcome relief for the federal income tax payment deadline, I believe that taxpayers require additional relief,” the Chairman wrote. “I respectfully request that you immediately defer the deadline for all filing and tax payment obligations until July 15, 2020.”
