Neal Secures Federal Language to Improve Union Station Landscape

Springfield, MA – As part of the recent federal funding package that recently passed the House of Representatives, Congressman Neal secured language to make Union Station eligible for additional grant programs at the Department of Transportation. This would make the station and other rail transportation hubs like it eligible for grants to increase the green space surrounding the station including trees, vegetation, and enhanced streetscapes. The funds could be used to increase green infrastructure and pleasant surroundings but also increase air quality, enhance security efforts and reduce the structures overall energy use.

“When Springfield Union Station officially opened its doors in June 2017, the interior and exterior of the building had undergone a massive rehabilitation, effectively bringing the sleeping beauty back to life,” said Congressman Richard E. Neal. “Now, over two years later, Union Station will be able to tap into federal funds to continue to provide that the surrounding landscape is similarly cared for.”
