Congressman Richard E. Neal released the following statement after Democrats in the Texas State Legislature left the state to break quorum and prevent a vote on the gerrymandered congressional map:

“After cutting health care and taking food away from millions of American families, Republicans are afraid to face the reality of a free and fair election. That’s why they’ve resorted to trying to rig the outcome with an outright assault on our democratic process.

“I commend members of the Texas State Legislature for standing up to this unconscionable attack on the integrity of our elections, one that threatens the right of every Texan to have their voice heard. Redistricting happens every ten years when a new census requires it, not leading up to the next election to gain a partisan advantage. A state government capitulating to a President who demands congressional maps be redrawn in favor of one political party – our founding fathers are rolling over as we speak.”
