SPRINGFIELD, MA— Ways and Means Committee Ranking Member Richard E. Neal (D-MA) released the following statement after the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit ruled President Trump’s tariffs unlawful:
“Today’s ruling is a victory for the rule of law, for the Constitution, and for American families who have paid the price for Donald Trump’s trade agenda. The Court has again affirmed what we argued from the start: the President never had the authority to unilaterally impose these sweeping tariffs under IEEPA.
“Trump’s unlawful tariffs have rattled the economy, driving up prices and putting American workers and businesses in the crosshairs, all while weakening security and jeopardizing key trading relationships. Today’s ruling makes clear that our values and the rule of law will outlast Trump’s bullying and corruption.
“Tariff authority rests with Congress. The Constitution is clear, and no president—Trump or anyone else—can invent powers they do not have. Ways and Means Democrats will continue fighting for trade policy that safeguards the people’s security, not one man’s political agenda and wallet.”
