PITTSFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – U.S. Rep. Richard Neal recognized the retirement of Bill Sturgeon, a Vietnam veteran and longtime Berkshire County radio host, during a speech on the House floor.
Sturgeon is a recipient of the Bronze Star and served as a local police officer before beginning his broadcasting career in 2008. A fixture in the western Massachusetts community, Sturgeon most recently hosted “Morning Drive” on WTBR. Neal described his longtime friend as a “pillar” of the region who used his platform to host substantive political debates and inform the public.
Born to a firefighter and a nurse in Pittsfield, Sturgeon graduated from Pittsfield High School in 1966. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1969 and served during the Vietnam War. Rep. Neal recognized Sturgeon’s military service during his remarks on the House floor. “He proudly served his country during the Vietnam War and was awarded the Bronze Star for his heroic achievements,” Neal said.
Following his military service, Sturgeon returned home to work in local law enforcement. He served as a police officer with both the Lanesborough and Pittsfield Police Departments before transitioning into a career in media.
Sturgeon began his broadcasting career in 2008 at WBRK radio. He eventually became a staple of Berkshire County media as the host of “Morning Drive” on WTBR. Neal described Sturgeon as a “Kennedy Democrat” who welcomed guests from across the political spectrum for respectful discussions.
“He welcomed debate that was respectful, substantive and grounded in a genuine desire to inform rather than inflame,” Neal said. Neal also noted that Sturgeon often brought a unique personal style to his professional interactions. “I can say with all confidence that he is the only reporter whom I have had the pleasure of interacting with to start an interview with, ‘Hey there, handsome,’” Neal said.
Neal concluded his tribute by noting that the community remains appreciative of Sturgeon’s varied career in public service. “The American people are forever grateful to Sturgeon for his service to our nation and the people of Berkshire County are forever grateful for him being a part of their morning drive,” Neal said.
