CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – Congressman Richard Neal challenged President Trump’s description of the United States economy following the State of the Union address on Wednesday night.

While the president characterized the country as being in a “golden age,” Neal argued that affordability remains the primary concern for his constituents.

Neal stated that the annual address should be a moment of “high purpose” rather than an occasion for finger-pointing and misinformation. His reaction follows a speech where the president made several promises regarding the future of national social programs and the economy.

Neal specifically noted that residents in Western Massachusetts are facing price increases that conflict with the administration’s economic narrative. He said there is currently less voter support for the president’s economic initiatives because affordability remains a primary issue for many families.

The congressman also addressed the president’s promise during the speech to protect Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid. Neal disputed this claim by pointing to the administration’s tax policy.

Neal, a Democrat representing Massachusetts, argued that the reality of the administration’s legislative agenda differs from the president’s rhetoric. “The president’s tax bill which will kick in after the midterm elections there are huge cuts to Medicaid and Medicare,” Neal said. “So again the misinformation or in this case disinformation that came from the president is not born out by the reality. All you have to do is talk to the president of Baystate Medical Center in our area hospitals. They can present the facts.”

Regarding the conduct of lawmakers during the address, Neal noted that the high level of tension between party members is counterproductive. He said the environment during the speech hurts ongoing efforts to work across the aisle in Congress.

The tax bill referenced by Neal is scheduled to take effect following the midterm elections.
