SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Congressman Richard Neal is expressing his thoughts on Baystate Health signing a joint agreement with Trinity Health of New England to take over Mercy Medical Center.
The decision came amid financial pressures, declining reimbursement rates and staffing shortages that could have led to mercy shutting down completely. Congressman Neal explains it comes at a time when federal budget cuts are affecting healthcare programs nationwide. He said, this acquisition will expand access to health care and improve services for the Pioneer Valley and beyond.
“Mercy is dependent by about 80% of their revenue flow comes from Medicare, Medicaid, ACA. Baystate is at about 73%. And I think that this merger will likely keep the distinct missions of the two hospitals,” said Congressman Neal.
The merger will not happen overnight, Mercy and Baystate will continue to operate independently until there’s regulatory approval. As for patients, hospital officials say to continue using all services as normal. Mercy Medical Center is still open for care.
