What a Republican Shutdown Means for MA-01

As of 12:01 AM on October 1, 2025, President Trump and Republicans in Congress have shut down the government. This reckless and unnecessary shutdown hurts working families, damages our economy, interrupts vital services, endangers our national security, and forces millions of our troops and government employees to work without pay.

In the First District of Massachusetts:

  • Nearly 30,000 individuals who receive health coverage under the Affordable Care Act will now face higher costs for their health insurance.
  • Approximately 74,000 households will lose access to Special Supplemental Nutrition Program (SNAP) and Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) benefits in a prolonged shutdown. Of these households, 38.5% have a child, 42.1% have an elderly person, and 56.9% have a person with a disability.
  • 8,744 federal workers in MA-01 have been furloughed or forced to work without pay, in addition to the many employees of businesses with government contracts who could be laid off, furloughed, or see their hours cut.

Whether you’re one of the millions of Americans at risk of facing high premiums or losing their healthcare, losing access to SNAP or WIC, or are a furloughed federal employee, I want to hear from you. Help me fight back by sharing your story.
