Washington, DC | Funeral of 29-year-old journalist took place in Belfast today

Congressman Richard E. Neal, Co-Chairman of the Congressional Friends of Ireland Caucus, released a statement today after the funeral of slain 29-year-old journalist Lyra Catherine McKee in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Lyra McKee was killed last week by a paramilitary group during a disturbance with police in the City of Derry.

“The murder of Lyra McKee was a cowardly act that must be condemned in the strongest possible terms. Lyra represented the future of Northern Ireland while the perpetrators of this senseless crime represent the past. We should be celebrating the life of this courageous young woman today rather than mourning her tragic loss. Twenty one years after the signing of the Good Friday Agreement, there is simply no justification for violence of any kind. And groups like the ‘New IRA’  have no support on either side of the Atlantic. I encourage those who witnessed Lyra’s killing to cooperate with the police in an effort to bring the gunman to justice,” said Congressman Richard E. Neal.
