WESTFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Congressman Richard Neal visited Westfield State University to address students, primarily political science majors, about the fast-changing nature of news and the importance of critical thinking.
Neal’s remarks aimed to prepare students for the demands of the modern workforce as they approach graduation.
The visit offered students an opportunity to gain insights from the congressman on the contemporary political environment and essential career skills. Neal, who also studied political science, focused his discussion on the need for adaptability in an era of rapid information shifts.
“The time in which we live, as you would know, is the speed of news and how quickly it all changes,” Neal said. “Just as we have time to take a breath, we are on to the next topic.”
Neal advised students on the importance of thorough reading, avoiding premature judgments and strategic foresight. He shared an anecdote about a downed F-15 pilot in Iran to illustrate the value of careful planning. Neal explained that if the United States had acted immediately without thinking, the pilot’s location could have been compromised, potentially leading to dire consequences. Instead, the U.S. took time to plan an effective rescue.
Following his address, the students were given time to ask Congressman Neal questions. The opportunity for students to converse with Congressman Neal aimed to help prepare them for a potential entry into the ever-changing political landscape.
