CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent testified before the House Ways and Means Committee today, where Congressman Richard Neal challenged the administration’s economic policies.
Rep. Neal argued that current policies, including tariffs, trade policy and inflation, are increasing costs for American consumers.
Rep. Neal, a Massachusetts congressman and the ranking member of the House Ways and Means Committee, stated that the Treasury Department is not adequately addressing the needs of American families. Neal highlighted an increase in reliance on credit cards for everyday expenses. He pointed to price increases on ground beef, gasoline and airfare as examples of rising costs impacting households.
Neal also defended the Federal Reserve’s independence during the hearing. He asserted that the conflict in Iran is driving up prices within the United States. Last night, Rep. Neal voted in favor of a war powers resolution designed to limit the president’s military actions in Iran.
Additionally, Neal questioned Bessent regarding a major IRS data leak, asking if thousands of affected taxpayers would receive the same immunity from audits reportedly granted to the president’s family.
