SPRINGFIELD, MA— Ways and Means Committee Ranking Member Richard E. Neal (D-MA) released the following statement after the Supreme Court ruled that President Trump does not have authority to fire Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook:
“Our central banking system was designed to be independent and free from the whims of one President, and today’s Supreme Court decision reaffirms that. Maintaining that independence is critical to our democracy and is what sets us apart from the rest of the world. The Fed works for the American people, not Donald Trump, and we will keep fighting to end the President’s attempt to amass power everywhere it turns.
“As we mark our nation’s 250th anniversary this week, we are reminded of the enduring principle that our institutions are strong when they remain independent and serve the public interest. Trump’s policies have already strained wallets and drained savings. The last thing the people need is for their finances to be further threatened by his dangerous politicization.”
