EAST LONGMEADOW, Mass. (WWLP) – U.S. Rep. Richard Neal visited East Longmeadow as part of his “Landmark Laws, Local Investments” tour to review community improvements supported by federal funding. The town has received more than $12 million in federal support.
The money was secured through three federal legislative measures: the American Rescue Plan Act, the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act and the Inflation Reduction Act.
The funding has helped address high-cost equipment needs and capital projects across multiple municipal departments.
The federal funds allowed East Longmeadow to purchase two new fire trucks, police cruisers and a vehicle for the Department of Public Works. Fire apparatuses average approximately $800,000 each, making the public safety equipment purchases a major financial undertaking for the town.
In addition to vehicle purchases, the funding was directed toward investments in the future East Longmeadow Town Hall. Neal met with representatives from the East Longmeadow Fire Department, the East Longmeadow Police Department and local administration during his visit.
East Longmeadow Town Manager Thomas Christensen discussed how the federal funds accelerated municipal project timelines.
“Our capital plan, like most towns, is huge, 20 years out,” Christensen said. “This money was four years right off the top. Can’t say enough how grateful we are.”
