Neal spearheaded new amicus brief before the Supreme Court challenging the unlawful IEEPA tariffs that are ravaging American wallets and businesses

SPRINGFIELD, MA—Ways and Means Committee Ranking Member Richard E. Neal (D-MA) released the following statement after the House Democrats’ Litigation Task Force filed a bipartisan amicus brief before the U.S. Supreme Court challenging Trump’s tariffs that were unlawfully imposed under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA), and fighting to lower prices:

“In a surprise to no one, the president didn’t get what he wanted, and now wants a new audience, but that doesn’t change the fact that the Courts have affirmed repeatedly what we’ve argued since day one of his chaotic trade war: Trump does not have the power to unilaterally impose these tariffs under IEEPA, yet he continues to act on his own whims and falsely justify his abuse of power. We expect the Supreme Court to again see the merits of our argument and the dangers of the President’s actions, turn the tariffs off, and restore Congress’s rightful responsibility.

“The people can’t take more of the President’s dangerous agenda. These tariffs are hiking costs, bankrupting family farms and businesses, and selling out American industry to his friends abroad.

“Once again, Democrats remain committed to a trade policy that protects the people and their wallets and outlasts one man’s bullying and corruption. It’s time to end this once and for all, to stop the President’s trade war, and for the Constitution to triumph.”
