SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Literally, hundreds of people were waiting for The Food Bank of Western Massachusetts mobile van Friday.

The van provides produce for families in need. For the last four years, the Food Bank mobile van has been making twice a month visits to western Massachusetts communities where many people can't afford to purchase all the food they need.

"About three years ago I got laid off, I got fired from my job looking for a job," said Diana Thompson of Holyoke. "Four or five months ago they tell me to go to the food bank when I got here, I was so happy there are places like this."

Congressman Richard Neal of Springfield joined the food bank staff distributing the fresh food, filling the bags with at least one week's supply of basic necessities.

"Well, I think that in a country that has been blessed with such great bounty that we all should agree upon the two principals, enough to eat and shelter," said Congressman Neal.

The food bank depends on donations and grants to stock its mobile van with produce the agency distributes to those in need.

The mobile van is on the road stopping to meet that need. The Hatfield based agency reaches out providing food at more than a dozen western Massachusetts cities and towns.

Helping people who look forward to the twice a month visits.
