HOLYOKE, Mass. (WWLP) - The Holyoke Health Center has received the means to more effectively care for its low income patients.

Congressman Richard Neal brought news of a $320,000 federal grant to help the Holyoke Health Center combat the opiod crisis.

Medical Director Alejandro Esparza outlined the center's drug abuse prevention initiative.

For seventeen years, Holyoke Medical Center has served a multi-cultural community from its facility on Maple Street.

Lourdes Matos and her children began getting their medical care there five years ago.

"They're like my family, I can talk with them about everything," said Matos. "I come for my health needs and my kids health"

"It's been a happy experience, we come here to get served," Finlay Oguko added. "You get an appointment, I get taken care of."

The center has also been providing care for nearly seven hundred Hurricane Maria survivors now living in Holyoke.

The focus on Holyoke Medical Center comes during the national observance of Community Health Center week. A time to assess this facility's positive impact on the lives of its 23,000 patients.
