Chairman Neal Calls for Seniors to Receive Economic Impact Payments Automatically, Without Filing an Additional Return

SPRINGFIELD, MA – Today, Chairman Richard E. Neal (D-MA) released the following statement regarding seniors’ access to the economic impact payments included in the CARES Act: “My fellow Ways and Means Democrats and I have been inundated with calls from concerned senior citizens regarding their ability to receive the economic impact payments Congress included in the CARES Act, which is now law. Yesterday, the IRS indicated that many Social Security and Veterans Administration beneficiaries, those who receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI), and other low-income individuals will need to file a simplified tax return to access these payments. However, crucial filing resources, like Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) and Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE), are not available to provide assistance due to the COVID-19 crisis. “My colleagues and I strongly urge Treasury Secretary Mnuchin and Social Security Administrator Saul to find a solution that will allow vulnerable groups to receive these funds automatically, without needing to file an additional return.” ### |
