Neal Visits Caring Health Center's New Vaccination Site on Sumner Ave in Springfield

Site Set to Vaccinate Hundreds of Residents Weekly

SPRINGFIELD, MA. — Congressman Richard E. Neal visited one of the areas’ newest vaccination sites in Springfield on Monday, April 12, 2021. The site which is operated by Caring Health Center (CHC) is located across the street from CHC’s medical practice at 473 Sumner Avenue in Springfield and is equipped to vaccinate 800 - 1,000 people per week.

Built with funds from the federal government as well as local community funders the site boasts 10 vaccination bays and has already vaccinated over 1,300 area residents since March 13. Carrying out such a momentous task, in addition to the comprehensive slate of healthcare services normally provided by the organization, required special assistance. In collaboration with the Department of Public Health, Army National Guard members were called upon to help staff the unit. Approximately six guard members were thoroughly trained and licensed to administer the vaccinations and have been a vital part of the location’s success.

“The Caring Health Center here in Springfield is a true gem,” said Congressman Richard E. Neal. “Not only have they been operating on the frontlines of the COVID-19 pandemic since day one, they continue to provide terrific general care to all of their patients. As one of only 250 Community Health Centers chosen to participate in the initial round of the federal Health Center COVID-19 Vaccine Program through the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), Caring Health is able to ensure that our most vulnerable populations, those experiencing homelessness, public housing residents, migrant workers, and those with limited English proficiency are vaccinated. In addition, through the American Rescue Plan, Caring Health Center will receive $3.3 million to ensure they have the resources they need to continue to do this important work. I remain committed to providing support from the federal government to Caring Health and other community health centers in the district because the work they do is vital to combatting this pandemic.”

The location of the site is critical. Situated along a PVTA bus route it is easily accessible by visitors with transportation issues. Persons with special mobility issues can also make use of CHC’s new patient transport fleet. “We are deeply grateful to the assistance provided in this effort from the National Guard and are proud to be able to offer this vaccine site as a resource to residents of underserved areas, increasing access and equity,“ said CHC President & CEO Tania M. Barber.

The site is open by appointment only to all area residents deemed eligible by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts guidelines. Interested persons can visit the state’s COVID-19 website to find out if they qualify. Hours of operation for the new location are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday – Wednesday. Persons who would like to make an appointment may call: (413) 693-1015 or (413) 739-1100 Ext.2508.
