Congressman Richard Neal Makes Remarks at Springfield Bhutanese Cultural Event

Bhutanese Society of Western Massachusetts successfully organized it’s 2018 annual cultural event at United Methodist Trinity Church in Springfield today from 11 am to 2 pm.

Congressmen Richard Neal along with his aide Elizabeth Quigley was present as the guest of honor at the event.

I was honored to receive an invitation to this event and what I like most is the development of entrepreneurship in this community”,Congressman Neal said. He said he has no doubt about the young generation becoming the next Steve Jobs.

The proclamation letter signed by Springfield Mayor Domenic J. Sarno was read out by Dr. Cornelia Daniels, Economics & Management Department Chair of Westfield State University and board of directors of Bhutanese Society of Western Massachusetts.

According to Taran Tiwari, Executive Director of the organization, “This types of events are very important for our community members from health to wellness to integration efforts. This year we have tried to promote cross-cultural exchanges by inviting other ethnic community-based organizations”. He further added that the proclamation from the city mayor and congressmen presence has added value towards true integration and civic engagement efforts.

About 200 community members were present during the event.

Dr. Richard T. Chu, History Department Professor from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst was invited as the chief guest of the event. Professor Chu provided the overview of how he got to know Bhutanese community in Springfield.

The event was sponsored by Mass Cultural Council, Interstate Mart International Grocery Bazar, Global Supermarket, American Care Alliance AFC, including individual board members and supporters.

The event featured Nepali cultural dances, songs, and a Philipino cultural dance. An iPhone XR amounting $ 800 was drawn at the end of the event. The winner of the raffle was announced as Dirga Maya Dahal of Springfield, MA.

Certificates were given to the performers and the volunteers by the program chief guest along with the executive director and board chair.

The program was anchored by Biraj Adhikari, program coordinator of the organization.
