Chairman Neal Statement on the 55th Anniversary of Medicare and Medicaid

Today, Ways and Means Committee Chairman Richard E. Neal (D-MA) released the following statement on the 55th anniversary of President Lyndon B. Johnson signing Medicare and Medicaid into law:

“Medicare and Medicaid are vital programs that allow seniors, disabled Americans, and low-income individuals to afford the health care they need to survive. These programs don’t only improve health, they lift people out of poverty. Medicare and Medicaid ensure that health care costs do not drive the nearly 140 million Americans who collectively rely on these programs into homelessness and destitution. Yet on their anniversary, these lifelines remain under attack by Republicans and the Trump Administration. Even in the midst of a raging pandemic, the GOP favors slashing Medicare and undoing the Affordable Care Act’s expansion of Medicaid to millions of vulnerable families in states across the country. I will never stop fighting to protect these programs and ensure they are available for generations to come.”
