Neal Reiterates Need for COMPETES Act to Respond to China’s Unfair Trade PracticesDecember U.S. Trade Data Show Massive Shortfall in China’s “Phase 1” Commitments

Today, House Ways and Means Chairman Richard E. Neal (D-MA) released the following statement emphasizing the need for the America COMPETES Act of 2022 in light of new trade data that show China failed to comply with its “Phase 1” commitments: “The latest trade data show that China has not kept up with its commitments. When the Trump Administration negotiated their ‘Phase One’ deal, I was weary of the accountability mechanisms and the failure is now clear. China has yet again disregarded the trade rules it agreed to while continuing to commit atrocities against workers and perpetuate unfair and non-market trade practices. These actions are wholly unacceptable and make the only bill that’s tough on China, the House-passed America COMPETES Act, even more urgent.” On February 4, 2022, the House passed the America COMPETES Act of 2022 to enhance our nation’s competitiveness, strengthen our supply chains, and crack down on China’s trade abuses. ### |
