Neal Statement at Economic Competitiveness Conference Committee Meeting

(As prepared for delivery)

Thank you, Chair Cantwell and Chair Johnson, for calling this important meeting today.  It’s nice to see so many of my colleagues from both Chambers and both sides of the aisle here to discuss such a critical issue.

China presents one of the key and defining challenges of our time. We’ve spent the past few decades attempting to incorporate China into the global trading and international economic system, hoping that they would eventually play by the rules, move towards democracy, and support human rights at home.

Unfortunately, that hasn’t happened. Instead, China has become more emboldened in its use of non-market and anti-competitive trade practices. China has taken steps backwards on human rights, and they continue to deploy economic coercive tactics against our allies and our own businesses.  Now, there is growing concern regarding China’s support of Russia’s unprecedented invasion in Ukraine.

This conference is an opportunity for both parties in both chambers to come together to directly respond to these challenges.  I’m committed to working in a bipartisan, bicameral fashion to deliver a strong bill that supports American workers, manufacturers, and businesses while confronting China’s unfair trade practices head on.

Let’s seize this moment to empower American innovators, to shore up our supply chains, and to propel the United States into a prosperous, secure future for generations to come.

I look forward to working with my colleagues in the coming weeks to get this important legislation across the finish line.

Thank you and I yield back.
