SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Congressman Richard Neal visited the Springfield Materials Recycling Facility on Bernie Avenue in honor of Earth Day Wednesday. Springfield Materials is a recycling organization that processes recyclable paper and cardboard separately from containers. The facility, which opened 30 years ago in 1990, was proposed during Congressman Neal’s tenure as Mayor of the City of Springfield. He spoke with 22News on how the facility has improved the environment in the Pioneer Valley since it first opened. "It’s success has been wild it has taken tons of rubbish and processed through recycling and it’s taken enormous amounts of pressure off the landfills," said Congressman Neal. Over 74 western Massachusetts municipalities are under a regional contractual agreement for processing recyclable material. |
