Neal Statement on Republicans’ Surprise Billing Our Workers Act

Ways and Means Committee Ranking Member Richard E. Neal (D-MA) blasted Republicans’ Surprise Billing Our Workers Act:

“Democrats stand strong in fighting fraud, and every single Republican voted against the American Rescue Plan’s investment in prosecuting criminals, recovering taxpayer dollars, and modernizing state UI systems for the challenges of tomorrow. These dollars have already held fraudsters accountable, and states are using new tools to detect and prevent fraud. So much so that the call has come from within our own House. Yet, Republicans want to cut off successful, ongoing work to leave states to pick up the pieces. This bill is a net cut in fraud-fighting dollars and will disincentivize states from referring fraud cases for prosecution. It will let criminals off the hook while punishing workers who received accidental overpayments as many as 10 years prior with surprise bills.

“One only has to look at the news to see why it’s no wonder Republicans don’t want to hold pandemic fraudsters accountable. They’d have to start the search in their own Conference.”
