Ways and Means Ranking Member Richard E. Neal (D-MA) released the following statement after the Treasury Department released a report examining how the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) could implement a direct filing program to ease taxpayers’ burden and deliver more comprehensive services:

“With the Inflation Reduction Act, Democrats kicked off a transformation of the IRS, reversing decades of Republican-led neglect and breathing new light into the agency. When 70 percent of taxpayers qualify for IRS’s current Free File services, yet less than 3 percent take advantage, it’s time for change. Today’s report provides a framework for saving taxpayers time and money while giving them the experience they deserve. While Republicans circle the wagons to protect wealthy tax cheats, Democrats are delivering on the promise of the Inflation Reduction Act and building a fairer tax system for all.”
