Today, Ways and Means Committee Ranking Member Richard E. Neal (D-MA) released the following statement on the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) May 2023 jobs report:

“Had President Biden not secured an agreement to prevent Republicans from forcing a devastating default, today’s outlook would be completely different. With 339,000 jobs created in May, our hard-earned and historic economic recovery is unphased by Republicans’ best attempts to sabotage it. Democrats spurred job growth with the American Rescue Plan, Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, CHIPS and Science Act, and Inflation Reduction Act, and Republicans tried their hardest to derail our progress with a job-killing recession. We create jobs, and there is no substitute for the dignity and security of a paycheck.

“Now that we’ve made it through Republicans so-called ‘fiscal responsibility’ era, they are headed to what they do best: cut taxes for the wealthy and well-connected. Ways and Means Democrats won’t let anyone forget the cycle we know all too well. Republicans cut the deficit on the backs of hardworking Americans only to turn around to give major tax handouts to special interests and the top 1%.”
