Neal Statement on First Circuit Court of Appeals Decision on EPA Final Permit Decision for Housatonic River Cleanup

Today, Congressman Richard E. Neal released the following statement after the First Circuit Court of Appeals upheld the final permit decision issued by the Environmental Protection Agency, obligating the General Electric Company to perform a cleanup of the Rest of River portion of the GE-Pittsfield/Housatonic River Site.

“With yesterday’s ruling by the First Circuit Court of Appeals to uphold the final permit decision issued by the EPA, General Electric’s cleanup of the Rest of River portion of the GE-Pittsfield/Housatonic River Site can now move forward. After more than 70 years, impacted communities will soon be able to access a beautiful Housatonic River free of risks stemming from the contaminated waters. The Housatonic River is a gem in the Berkshire community, and this cleanup will ensure it can be enjoyed for generations to come. I applaud the community leaders whose advocacy brought this project to fruition, and I look forward to working with my local, state, and federal colleagues to ensure GE upholds its obligations.”
