Neal Statement on the 88th Anniversary of Social Security
Springfield, MA,
August 14, 2023
Ways and Means Committee Ranking Member Richard E. Neal (D-MA) issued the following statement celebrating the 88th anniversary of the enactment of the Social Security Act: “Social Security is our nation’s most sacred promise. For 88 years, we’ve come to know it as a beacon of economic security and for the compassion we share in times of uncertainty and loss. Americans contribute with every paycheck, and middle class families know they can count on these vital earned benefits, whether in good times or bad. “Republicans’ growing attacks and brazen threats to Social Security only redouble our commitment to protecting the program for today’s beneficiaries and tomorrow’s. In its 88 years, Social Security has never faced a threat like today’s extremist Republican Party. We will not let the over 170 House Republicans who support raising the retirement age get away with this reckless cut. And we certainly won’t let them trade Social Security for another tax cut to the wealthy and well-connected. “Democrats have warded off attack after attack from the GOP and we won’t stop there. Ways and Means Democrats will continue to safeguard and strengthen Social Security for the millions of Americans who have built this bedrock promise and for those who will benefit in the next 88 years and beyond.”
