Neal Marks Three Years Since the January 6th Attack on the Capitol
Springfield, MA,
January 6, 2024
Today, Ways and Means Committee Ranking Member Richard E. Neal (D-MA) released the following statement marking three years since the January 6th, 2021 Attack on the Capitol:
“Three years ago today, a violent mob of insurrectionists assaulted not only our Capitol, but our democracy itself. Millions across America watched in horror as extremists, instigated by the former President, stormed the Capitol in a politically-motivated attempt to prevent the peaceful transfer of power and overturn a legitimate election. During that horrible day, these insurrectionists assaulted the U.S. Capitol Police who were charged with safeguarding the building, desecrated the hallowed halls of Congress, and terrorized the hundreds of Members, staff, and visitors inside. “We must never forget the events of that terrible day, nor the courage and heroism of the U.S. Capitol Police, D.C. Metropolitan Police, National Guard, and other first responders. While the immediate memories of this horror may fade, no amount of deflection or calls of ‘legitimate political discourse’ can hide the truth or excuse the former President’s actions. We must never give quarter to those who would weaken our democracy, attack the rule of law, or give voice to division and hatred. Our democracy is a precious inheritance, and it is our shared, solemn responsibility as Americans to join in protecting our beliefs, freedoms, and opportunities each and every day, and for the generations to come.” ### |
