Neal Statement on the Republicans’ Abdication of Responsibility and Continued Political Stunts

Congressman Richard E. Neal released the following statement after House Republicans voted to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.

“Members of Congress take an oath to the Constitution, and with yet another political stunt, House Republicans are in direct violation of that oath. You do not impeach a Cabinet Secretary over policy differences – that is something the Framers explicitly rejected, and Republicans have failed to provide any evidence that meets the constitutional standard of ‘high crimes and misdemeanors.’

“This vote comes after a failed bipartisan vote last week and as Republicans have rejected efforts to negotiate bipartisan legislation to secure our border, provide aid to our allies in Ukraine and Israel, and aid humanitarian efforts in Ukraine, Israel, and Gaza. Instead, House Republicans are taking marching orders from the former President, perpetuating issues instead of prioritizing solutions. The adults in the room want results.

“Even from the minority, House Democrats are doing more legislating to deliver for workers and families than our counterparts, and today’s sham stunt stoops beneath the work of the people.”
