Neal Voices Support for Use of Rail in Housatonic Rest of River Transportation Plan

Congressman Richard E. Neal released the following statement regarding the General Electric Company’s Housatonic Rest of River Transportation Plan.

“After more than 70 years, communities impacted by the contamination of the Housatonic River will soon be able to access a beautiful river free of risks stemming from PCBs. However, we must ensure this process is done the right way, and that means using rail in the transportation of PCB soils. The plan put forth by General Electric emphasizes the use of trucks, an approach that prioritizes cost-saving measures and fails to take into account the effects on the surrounding region – namely, traffic, emissions, and the health and well-being of the general public. We want a Housatonic River that can be enjoyed for generations to come, but we cannot lose sight of the short- and long-term impacts this project will have on Berkshire County.”
