SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Springfield Partners for Community Action is hosting an event ahead of tax season at their offices on State Street in Springfield.

People who earn $64,000 or less are eligible for free tax help and return preparation at Springfield Partners’s VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) site, according to a news release from Springfield Partners for Community Action. Staff and volunteers are trained by the IRS to help people prepare their tax returns. The site also prepares and e-files your tax return at no cost.

The free tax help site on State Street will be open Tuesday through Saturday starting next Tuesday, the 30th.

If you want to visit, you’ll need to call 413-263-6500 to set up an appointment, as there are no walk-ins. If you would like to attend, bring the following information:

  • Original Social Security Card for the taxpayer and everyone listed on the tax return
  • Valid Picture Identification
  • Health Insurance Documents
  • Any tax documents received including information about income and credits
  • Bank account information

Congressman Richard Neal and Mayor Domenic Sarno are both expected to attend the event on Monday, which runs from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.

“Every year, thousands of taxpayers in Hampden County rely on Springfield Partners for Community Action and their VITA program to file their income taxes. This program is about economic opportunity and getting money into the hands of people at the lower end of the economic spectrum. Today, we celebrate yet another year of Springfield Partners and their mission of helping families throughout our communities,” said Congressman Neal. “In Congress, we are continuing to fight for low- and middle-income families by putting money in their pockets, ultimately putting them on a pathway to prosperity. Initiatives like the Child Tax Credit and the Earned Income Tax Credit help millions of families put bread on the table and keep their lights on. Thanks to the work of organizations like Springfield Partners for Community Action, we are ensuring that those families can access the benefits they have earned.”

“We want to make life a little easier for taxpayers by alerting them about a special tax credit that can put money in their pockets. The Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) is a tax benefit for working people and their families and it allows more dollars to flow into our community. We want workers who may qualify for the EITC to have all the information they need to get the EITC and get it right.” Paul F. Bailey, Executive Director.
