Today, Ways and Means Committee Ranking Member Richard E. Neal (D-MA) released the following statement responding to the release of the 2024 Social Security and Medicare Trustees Reports:

“Social Security and Medicare are foundational promises of economic security for all who contribute with every paycheck, throughout a lifetime of work, and deserve the benefits they’ve earned. Democrats’ historically successful agenda under President Biden has accelerated our economy, driving historic growth and contributing to today’s encouraging news. Expanding the Medicare trust fund’s lifespan by another five years is more proof of how our legislative successes are positively changing the lives of the American people.

“Just weeks ago, 80% of House Republicans renewed their shameful attacks on Social Security, calling for raising the retirement age and executing the largest benefit cuts ever. It’s no surprise that they’re already planning another tax cut for their wealthy and well-connected friends—the life cycle of Republican governing is always the same: first, they line the pockets of billionaires and big corporations while leaving the American people to pay the bill, and then, they call for cuts to critical resources that workers have earned through decades of hard work. Democrats will never back down: we’ve warded off attack after attack from Republicans and we will continue to safeguard and strengthen Social Security and Medicare for generations to come.”
