Neal Statement on House Passage of the Federal Disaster Tax Relief Act

Ways and Means Committee Ranking Member Richard E. Neal (D-MA) released the following statement after the House of Representatives passed the Federal Disaster Tax Relief Act by a bipartisan vote. The legislation previously passed the House within the Tax Relief for American Families and Workers Act which is currently stalled in the Senate:

“Tax Subcommittee Ranking Member Mike Thompson and Rep. Greg Steube are getting things done for the small businesses and working families that have been impacted by wildfires, train derailments, and other recent natural disasters and ought to be commended for their tireless dedication to their constituents.

“Make no mistake: this critical tax relief would already be on its way to communities across America alongside an expanded Child Tax Credit that would help 16 million children, if Senate Republicans weren’t shamefully playing politics. Refusing to take up the bipartisan, House-passed Tax Relief for American Families and Workers Act only shows they care more about the former President’s political future than our nation’s children or the job they were elected to do. At the very least, Senate Republicans could stop denying their own constituents affected by natural disasters the opportunity to recover and rebuild, and quickly send this bill to the President’s desk.”
