Neal Statement on 89th Anniversary of Social Security
Springfield, MA,
August 14, 2024
Ways and Means Committee Ranking Member Richard E. Neal (D-MA) issued the following statement celebrating the 89th anniversary of the enactment of the Social Security Act:
“Rising out of the darkness of the Great Depression, Social Security now stands as our nation’s most sacred promise. As we mark the 89th anniversary of one of the greatest legislative achievements in history, we celebrate every contribution, every on-time benefit, and the peace of mind so many Americans have from their earned benefits. After a lifetime of hard work, or in the face of uncertainty and loss, Social Security lights the way.
“With the former president willing to say or do anything in service of tax cuts for billionaires and big corporations, we must call it as we see it: Republicans are the biggest threat to the health and economic security of the American people. While they vary the names of their attacks on Social Security, they all share a danger that the American people simply cannot afford. Strengthening and protecting Social Security for the next nearly 9 decades and beyond is the only option forward, and we will fight like hell against any attack, big or small.” ### |
