Ways and Means Committee Ranking Member Richard E. Neal (D-MA) and Social Security Subcommittee Ranking Member John B. Larson (D-CT) released the following statement after the Congressional Budget Office, an independent and nonpartisan body, found that schemes to raise the retirement age, like those proposed by House Republicans, would slash annual benefits by 13 percent for today’s workers:

“With this latest report from CBO, the American people can see in black and white how dangerous Republican proposals to raise the retirement age are for our nation’s Social Security recipients. The Republican Study Committee, representing more than three-quarters of House Republicans, has repeatedly proposed raising the age. Let us be clear: Social Security is a sacred promise that only Democrats can be trusted to protect and preserve for generations to come. House Republicans share a draconian agenda to cut earned benefits while still leaving the Social Security Trust Fund in jeopardy.”
