Neal Statement on the National Taxpayer Advocate's Annual Report

Ways and Means Committee Ranking Member Richard E. Neal (D-MA) released the following statement after the National Taxpayer Advocate released her yearly report to Congress:

“Ushering in her first positive report since taking office, the National Taxpayer Advocate has put Republicans on notice: Democrats’ investments in the IRS are working and cutting our multiyear funding will lead to direct cuts in taxpayer service. Taxpayers experienced better service and faced shorter wait times, while the IRS eliminated pandemic-era backlogs of returns and paperwork. Even with more work to be done, this is welcome news and proof that a well-funded IRS strengthens tax administration for the people.  This report lists ERTC processing delays as the most serious problem facing taxpayers. Rampant fraud has slowed the processing of these claims, but implementing certain recommendations may speed up processing and root out corruption.

“So many resources have gone into making the IRS more modern, efficient, and effective, and the last thing the American people need is for Republicans to diminish our progress and side with billionaires and big corporations.”
