Ways and Means Committee Ranking Member Richard E. Neal (D-MA) released the following statement marking the 50th Anniversary of the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) on EITC Awareness Day: “Since its inception in 1975, the EITC has been a powerful and instrumental tool that has provided millions of working Americans with a low-to-moderate income a lifeline to remain in the workforce and out of poverty. “For 50 years, families who have claimed the EITC have been given tax relief that has helped them keep food on the table, afford care for their children, and build stronger, more prosperous futures. The results speak for themselves: as of December this past year, approximately 23 million workers and families have received roughly $64 billion in relief from the EITC. “Despite the successes and availability of the EITC, many American families are missing out on its crucial benefit, with the IRS estimating that one in five eligible taxpayers are missing out on claiming this relief. Every worker should use the EITC assistant to check their eligibility and visit the Child-related tax benefits comparison page to learn more about basic eligibility rules for the EITC and several other tax credits they may be eligible for.” ### |
