Neal Statement on Latest Trump Weaponization of the IRS

Ways and Means Committee Ranking Member Richard E. Neal (D-MA) released the following statement after President Trump announced his intention to illegally revoke the tax-exempt status of Harvard University: “Harvard has done nothing wrong. President Trump is a threat to the rule of law, and by revoking Harvard’s tax-exempt status, he’s weaponizing the power of our government to attack any institutions that stand up for the rule of law. It’s unconstitutional, it’s illegal, and reeks of weakness. As is the case with all the president’s senseless feuds, he can’t even keep his story straight on why his targets are being targeted, proving even further that there’s no standing in law or fact. It’s childish retribution that will affect lives, our nation’s health, and our standing as global innovators. “Don’t just take it from me though. I remember my Republican colleagues who have spoken out against weaponization over the years. Take it from them. Senator Ted Cruz: "I can also assure you that were this a Republican president, a Republican Attorney General, and a Republican IRS that were targeting Democrats, I at least would speak out just as vigorously against it because if we are going to respect rule of law, the apparatus of the federal government cannot and should not be used as a partisan tool to bludgeon your enemies." Chairman Jim Jordan: “For an administration to use an agency as a weapon against their political opponents is as wrong as things can be in this country.” “I couldn’t have said it better myself.” ### |
