Neal Statement on Federal Court Blocking Trump’s Reckless Tariff Tax
Springfield, MA,

Ways and Means Committee Ranking Member Richard E. Neal (D-MA) released the following statement after a three-judge panel of the Court of International Trade ruled that the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) is not a blank check for presidential abuse: “Tonight’s federal court decision to block President Trump’s misuse of emergency powers is a resounding affirmation of the rule of law and the constitutional balance of power. For months, I have voiced concerns over this Administration’s reckless trade policies and the fallout forced on the people. These so-called ‘emergencies’ were always legal fantasies and have now been exposed as such in a court of law. “Before any more damage is done, Congress must reclaim its constitutional authority over trade, and House Democrats stand at the ready while others chicken out. We need transparency, proper oversight, and trade policy grounded in fact, not political stunts. This ruling should be a wake-up call to my Republican colleagues: it’s time to put your constituents over your blind loyalty to the president and work with us to protect the economy.” ### |
