Congressman Richard Neal reacts to the ongoing feud between President Donald Trump and Harvard University

By Sara Bien-Aime, 22 News

On May 2, 2025, President Donald Trump announced that he would revoke Harvard University’s tax-exempt status.

According to Harvard, the tax exemption means more money can go towards scholarships, lifesaving medical research, and technology advancements.

President Trump’s announcement comes after Harvard sued the administration over the decision to freeze more than $2 billion in funding for the institution. The administration wanted the school to change and end programs like diversity, equity, and inclusion. According to Congressman Neal, Harvard has done nothing wrong. He said this decision is a breach of academic freedom.

“What happens in Harvard Medical School is important to the world, and I think we need to treat it that way. I don’t think we need any presidential administration intervening or interfering with what is taught on campus,” said U.S Congressman Richard Neal.

Congressman Neal also told 22News he met with Harvard’s President to discuss this decision.

He advised him to keep fighting.

In a statement, Congressman Richard Neal said, “President Trump is a threat to the rule of law, and by revoking Harvard’s tax-exempt status, he’s weaponizing the power of our government to attack any institutions that stand up for the rule of law.”
