Mass. lawmakers react to National Guard deployment into Los Angeles

By Wesley Days and Ryan Trowbridge, Western Mass News

Massachusetts lawmakers are speaking out amid ongoing protests in Los Angeles and those who represent the Commonwealth in Washington D.C. are sounding the alarm on President Trump’s reaction.

We reached out to Congressman Richard Neal on Monday and, while he wasn’t available to go on camera, he did pass along a statement that stated that the president is showing a complete disregard of state and local law enforcement.  He said that activating the National Guard in California is completely unwarranted and added: “This misguided action does nothing but stoke fear, raise tensions, and sow chaos – a common theme of this administration. As a former mayor, I know the ability of local law enforcement to handle these types of situations.”

Neal said calling in the National Guard should have been a last resort and something done at the request of the state’s governor.

We also reached out to Congressman Jim McGovern for comment, but we have not yet heard back.
