SPRINGFIELD, MA (WGGB/WSHM) -- House Democrats pass a $1.9 trillion COVID-19 relief bill, but not one House Republican voted in favor of the bill, and now it will face an uphill battle in the Senate. People are closer to getting a $1,400 stimulus check. The final vote was a narrow margin of 219–212, with two House Democrats breaking ranks and voting no. There was no bipartisan House support on this bill, something President Joe Biden campaigned on. He’s urging Congress to get the bill to his desk. “If we act now, decisively, quickly, and boldly, we can finally get ahead of this virus. We can finally get our economy moving again," Biden said. Yariann Canton is like millions of Americans who became unemployed due to coronavirus pandemic, and with less money coming in, she, like many, has fallen behind on bills. So she plans to use the next stimulus check to catch up on her bills. "I'd be using it for the bills pretty much. I was unemployed for a little bit due to COVID. So it's pretty much I'm going to be using that to catch up on my bills," Canton said. The breakdown for the $1,400 checks is still those making $75,000 annually for individuals and $150,000 for couples. “The people of this country have suffered far too much for too long. We need to relieve that suffering. The American Rescue Plan does just that. It relieves the suffering, and it's time to act," Biden added. "I was behind car insurance, and that's pretty much a high bill since I am only 21 right now. So usually it's higher for people that are younger than 25-years-old," she noted. |
