SPRINGFIELD — TD Bank has reversed a decision to close its State Street branch in Mason Square after an outcry from customers and local officials. The branch — which the bank had previously said would close Friday — will remain open with reduced hours. “We are notifying our customers that the TD Bank store at 958 State Street in Springfield will remain open after January 31," the bank said in a prepared statement. “It is important to TD Bank that we provide to our customers a variety of convenient options to serve their banking needs.” The branch will be open Mondays and Fridays from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. The new hours take effect Monday, U.S. Rep. Richard Neal, D-Springfield, praised the decision, saying it provides “a reasonable path forward.” When local elected officials asked for my assistance last year, I agreed to contact TB Bank and discuss how we could keep the Mason Square branch viable," Neal said in a statement. “I personally spoke with the TD Bank CEO and urged him to reconsider his decision to close the bank.” Neighbors and their elected representatives protested the threatened closure, saying it would create an inconvenience for large numbers of residents without a full-service bank. "After 40 years of providing financial services in the same location, the bank will remain open,” Neal said Friday. Mayor Domenic J. Sarno said he was pleased to hear the news from TD Bank executives. He thanked Neal and especially Regional Vice President Frank Crinella, a Springfield native,, who worked with the mayor closedly “to facilitate a plausible solution to continue full banking services for our Mason Square residents and businesses.” “Also, in my discussions with TD Bank officials, they have assured me that they will continue their philanthropic efforts for the betterment of our Springfield community,” Sarno said. State Rep. Bud L. Williams, D-Sprngfield, said he is excited and happy that the bank was convinced to keep the branch open. “It’s only twp days a week but that’s a tremendous start from a situation where the bank was going to be totally closed,” Williams said. The community and officials will now work with Neal and the bank on keeping the bank open, he said. TD Bank said it has seven locations in Springfield, including three that are less than two miles from the State Street branch. It also offers online services. “The State Street store will continue to provide 24-hour access to its on-site ATM, which customers can use for deposits, withdrawals and other transactions,” TD Bank’s statement said. "We reached this decision based on feedback from the community. As part of our normal business practices, we regularly evaluate the viability of existing TD Bank stores and new locations. We will continue this practice for all of our stores, including our Springfield locations.” |
