SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WLWP) - The city of Springfield is implementing even more security measures ahead of MGM's grand opening.

During a news conference Monday morning, police, city leaders, and Congressman Richard Neal announced that 250 cameras connected to the Springfield Police Department's Real-Time Analysis Center have been installed at Union Station. 

Connecticut Rail has estimated that up to 1,800 more people will pass through Union Station every day once MGM Springfield opens. Springfield police are now prepared to see what happens there through hundreds of security cameras.

"I think in this instance, the police department will be notified instantly, and their response will be immediate," Neal said.

22News went to the police department's Real-Time Analysis Center on Monday where the cameras are monitored.

"Twenty of them will be up and running at all times for us," Springfield Police Deputy Chief William Cochrane said. "We can tap into the other ones whenever we have to. The video is stored for a period of time so we can go back and review it."

Police are able to review two hours worth of footage in six minutes; what Mayor Domenic Sarno calls, "cutting edge safety measures." 

"It's going to add an extra set of eyes around the area here as we continue to send the message about the city of Springfield that it is clean, and it is safe," Sarno said.

Mayor Sarno said having the ability to see what's happening at Union Station in real time will help police keep travelers safe.
