3 area fire departments receive federal grants

Fire Departments in Gardner, Sturbridge, and Ashburnham have been awarded grants as part of the latest round of the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Assistance to Firefighter Grants, Staffing for Adequate Fire & Emergency Response grants, and Fire Prevention and Safety grants.

According to a joint press release by the offices of U.S. Senators Elizabeth Warren and Edward J. Markey, along with U.S. Reps. Richard E. Neal, Michael E. Capuano, Niki Tsongas, Katherine Clark and Seth Moulton, the Gardner Fire Department received a $452,728 grant through the Assistance to Firefighter Grants for the purchase of a new fire pumper engine. The Sturbridge Fire Department was awarded a $54,259 for an air compressor/air refill system. The Ashburnham Fire Department received a $90,200 grant through the Staffing for Adequate Fire & Emergency Response program to fund a call/volunteer firefighter recruitment and retention program.

The round of grant funding awarded $3.3 million to communities across the state.
