Washington, DC
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Congressmen Richard Neal and Joe Kennedy toured a school in Springfield Monday.
They visited STEM Middle Academy in Springfield, which focuses on ‘STEM’, or science, technology, engineering and math. Those are fields the Congressmen said are important to our nation’s future. The school even has an engineering class for students where they come up with real life problems and solve them with engineering.
Congressman Neal said a new study shows there are 18,000 manufacturing jobs available right now in New England. “Answering that is what the Springfield Public Schools is attempting to do through science and math in particular. The benefit that we give to employers is that we have the best talent anywhere not just in the country but in the world and that comes, that starts with schools like this teaching these skills to our young students.”
Congressman Kennedy said he believed a hands-on learning approach was important in addition to learning for standardized testing.
They both enjoyed seeing such a wide range of diversity at the school, as well as many girls interested in these fields.
